South Florida Real Estate Blog - Updates & Realty News

During the summer, when everyone wants to turn on the AC, the cost of energy to (Miami - Lauderdale - Palm Beach  homes) is always a big worry. You can worry a little less this year, by following these energy-saving tips:

1. Weather strip/caulk doors and windows – Although many homeowners do this on the outside of the house, caulking doors and windows should be done on the inside to stop heat from leaking in and cool air from leaking out.

2. Lighten drapes/curtains – Light-colored window coverings can help block the sunlight and keep heat out of your home without totally eliminating the light. Choose opaque drapes, curtains or Venetian blinds in neutral to light shades. Any windows without covering are windows that let heat in.

3. Turn off/unplug appliances – Every appliance in your home gives off heat, from the toaster to the electric razor. Here’s the kicker – many of them give off heat even when they’re turned off, simply because they’re plugged in. Get into the habit of unplugging the appliances you can unplug, and turning off the ones you can’t.

4. Install ceiling fans – Ceiling fans don’t cool the air, exactly, but they do keep the air rotating and moving so it doesn’t get a chance to get hotter. They’re also a cheaper alternative to the cost of AC in South Florida homes.

5. Use your furnace fan – Your AC and furnace should also have a setting for just the fan. Turning your fan on instead of AC will help circulate the air so you have a more even temperature throughout the house.

6. Open windows – If it’s cooler outside than it is in your house, opening the windows only makes sense. Many SE Florida homes have the AC turned on at the beginning of summer and never turn it off until fall. Instead, any day that has a good breeze and is even a degree or two cooler than inside, turn off the AC and open the windows. This airs out the house as well as lowering your bill.

For long-term energy efficiency, look into Energy Star rated appliances; not only can they lower your energy bill, but they can also raise the property value of your home. Through 2010, you may be able to claim a tax credit of up to 30% for purchases of new Energy Star furnaces, windows, and insulation.

Whether you’re looking to add energy-efficient appliances to raise your property value or looking to buy an already energy-efficient home, we can help. Call us today at 407-876-5771 for more information.
